The Importance of Philanthropy
The Coalition today issued a statement emphasizing the importance of philanthropy to the continued access -- and success -- of Texas higher education. The recent losses of educational philanthropic giants like Bernard Rapoport and Howard Terry remind us that the quality of education received by future generations is a key driver to the assurance for the future of high quality education being produced at our flagship institutions. Coalition applauds UT's formation of Committee on Business Productivity
This week, The Alcalde highlighted the University of Texas at Austin's announcement of its 13-member Committee on Business Productivity, which will help UT review its business practices and make recommendations to cut costs and increase efficiency.
Coalition spokeswoman Jenifer Sarver called the committee a “smart and savvy” move by the University.“We applaud UT for continuing to push the envelope and become stronger and more efficient,” Sarver says. “This committee is in direct contrast to anyone who would suggest UT is trying to maintain the status quo. Universities shouldn’t always be run like businesses, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have much to learn from business leaders.”Continue reading -
Exxon Mobil Corp. CEO says education, scientific research is crucial to future success
Rex Tillerson, chairman and CEO of Exxon Mobil Corp., penned an Op-Ed for the Dallas Morning News this week. Tillerson said universities - including his alma mater, the University of Texas at Austin - are uniquely positioned to stimulate technological innovation by focusing on education and research.
Few public-policy issues are more fundamental to our success as a nation than assuring quality public education and supporting basic scientific research. To compete in the global economy, the United States must be a nation of innovation.
